Kincora Sports a new twist in North 3Di mainsail design.

I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work with Dan Neri from North Sails in the development of Kincora’s new 3Di main.  After sailing last year with a paneled main from a different company I was ready to put the proper engine on Kincora.

Great looking sail

As some of the readers will remember I owned Samba, Quest 30 made famous by Phil Garland of Hall Spars.  Phil raced Samba hard with great success and now she is being raced well by Tristan Mouligne out of Newport.  Tristan is still winning with the same North main that Phil used 12 years ago.  Now there is some longevity in a sail.  Samba’s  main was designed by Dan Neri.  So when it came time for Kincora’s main it was great to work with Dan to keep the same characteristics as the original sail, with a few small but important changes.

1st reef 242
1st reef

I have heard directly from people in the industry even sailmakers that 3Di is heavy, distorts at the reef points, and will not hold up over time.  Their comments “Make sure you check the sail often, they don’t last.”  Well I can tell you I check the sails often and I have never used a better mainsail.  With most of a season on the main it looks new.  The sail is light, no sorry, very lightweight.  Stiff is under estimating this sail it is a rock.  The leach is perfect, be it full main, 1st reef, 2nd reef, or 3rd reef.  And distortion at the reef is not a factor at all.

Now I have to state this sail has features that have not been used before in 3Di mains.  This sail is a break through sail for boats in the 30’ range and is worth checking out for your next main.
