• Tuning your foils for better control

After the last post on sanding a Donaldson Trailing Edge, I thought it only fitting to show how I take our foil tuning one more level.  Do you have to go through all of this sanding and work to have fun with your foil gear, not at all.  But for me who is always experimenting, testing, and learning, it is fun, and I feel the difference, as do foilers in our group.   One caution is don’t sand too much, you can break through the clear coat that is on a lot of foils and that will mean spraying clear…

  • Removing the Noise/Vibration from Foils

You buy a new hydro foil, skeg, keel, centerboard, daggerboard, rudder, and it makes noise.  It could be a low drone, humming, or a whistle.  This is annoying and might be effecting the efficiency of the foil.   While studying Naval Architecture I use to meet with my favorite professor Ernest Brierley in his office.  He would take time to help me further my knowledge on a subjects of my choice.  These meeting were beyond the normal curriculum.  One day I said something about keel/rudder humming since I was drawing the foils for a new 33’ design. His great response,…

  • Improve your sailing by wing foiling

I have said for decades that if you want to be a better sailor in Archimedes mode you need to windsurf at over 20 kts often. When you are that in tune with your sailing you get on a displacement boat, and you are thinking steps ahead. Now with wing foiling the same is true. But, wing foiling is a lot easier to learn than windsurfing at over 20 kts, while also being easier on the body.  Plus you have a whole new set of vectors to work though. An we all know sailing is about being in balance.  With…

  • Getting through Rhode Island Winter 2024/25

I started going south to sail and race in 1976.  There were only a few years I missed due to too much work in the shop, or being on the West Coast racing in San Fran. This winter I took off going south due to my second TKR.  Since I had this done in 2019, I know the game. This will only make the sailing I love better.  My plan has been to be wing foiling, SUPing this week.  I have been doing dry land work with the wing the last month to start getting the feel back. And of…

  • Happy Holidays 2024

The year 2024 has been full of great adventures. We spent the month of February in Antigua cheering on Hound. Carol did some interviews for the book and I capture on board and race start stills. While there we fit in a lot of Wingfoiling, thanks to the hound container. The final two weeks in Antigua we were at the Dutchmans Bay Cottages feet from the water. If you are into SUP, Kite surfing/foiling, wingfoiling this is a dream location. Off the beaten path a bit but that makes it special. And if you want to rent gear, take lessons,…

  • Our Wingfoil Progression, Part 3

Part 1: Our Wing-foil board progression Part 2: Our Foil package progression Part 3: Our inflatable wings progression Picking the right wing to learn on and progress our foiling has been fun.  When we started in October 2021 until now October 2024, the industry has made big improvements with inflatable wing designs and construction.  We purchased our first wings before purchasing boards and foils.  I purchased a used Armstrong 6.0.  Carol purchased a new Ozone Wasp v2, 5.0.   We took these wings to the park for dry land practice.  This was a good move, we learned the feel of…
