Sail Newport

A few weeks ago I went with my wife Carol to pick up her Snipe at Sail Newport where she did some training. Wow, have things changed. You might say, no kidding, where have you been? Well, I am very blessed with my situation. I have my SUP at home and walk to the water, my windsurfing is from a park 5 min away, and our boats are on moorings at the end of the street, so I do not need to go to Sail Newport like I did when I lived in Newport.

But I have to say the whole crew has done a specular job. There is a new building going up by the hoist. This will be the third building they have built. All of it is tastefully done, and they have stayed on track with their goal, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center with access for all.

I first joined Sail Newport in 1987 when I moved to Newport. Sail Newport is the type of public sailing center every major harbor needs. We talk about helping sailing grow, but most who are in this conversation are doing it for profit, or to build their fleets. Look at Sail Newport, it is for the people and teaching kids life skills. Sure not all of these kids will stay in sailing. But that is OK, a lot of them will and it is more important to teach them life skills then worry if they will stay in sailing.

Go to their site and donate, you will be helping teach the kids, keep access to the water, and help the sport. www.sailnewport.org

Well done to all the staff at Sail Newport!
