Spring Prep Time

Sunset in Keys, March 2023

Writing this on 27 March, with spring starting in the Northern Hemisphere, it is a very exciting time of year.  All the new growth is popping in Rhode Island, with outside temperature at a sunny 59 degrees F today.

Spring in the air

I find this is a perfect time to test my coastal and offshore gear, lifejackets, PLB, all the gear hanging up in our sailing room.  Everything was inspected when it went into storage, washed, dried, and hung in a cool dry room.  Inflatable lifejackets need manual inflating, and let it sit out of the sun for two days to make sure they hold air.  I do not fully trust them since I have had multiple high end brands not inflate when in the water.  So test, test, test!  Also make sure there are spare cylinders, which I know some of mine are still on the boat I did the 2021 TranPac, so time to buy a few more.

Work Starts on Smedley

Getting boats ready is easy for us this year.  Smedley our great pulling boat is in my shop getting some glass work, and TLC which is long overdue.  And will be easy since she is the only boat in there.  Pierre our great Nauset 27 DownEast boat went on the market. You can see that ad in the dropdown menu on my home page, and why we are selling.

Our foil gear was just stowed away after a month of foiling in the Keys. What great fun, and both of us improved to another level.  Try WingFoiling and you will get hooked, as long as you are someone who likes fitness, and the challenge of foiling for a low cost.  We are adjusting our Wing range this year and adding another front foil to the gear list.  I have two Ozone Wasp 2 wings for sale on local Craig’s List.  Ozone Wasp 2 the 3 meter without much use and Ozone Wasp 2 the 5 meter in great shape.  Both have the really nice Ozone waist leach and great backpacks.

I have been looking at shorthanded boats for two clients.  It always surprises me when I finally go look at a boat how different they are from the broker ad, or what the owner says.  I guess I am picky, since I know what it takes to make them right. To me you should tell the bad with the good, but that is not the way of the world.  So you never know until you go check out the boat. If you know how to properly survey it makes a huge difference.  But if you can’t hire a great, not a cheap, but great surveyor.  The last three surveyors I hired since insurance will not take my survey, they where a joke.  They missed so many things with some major problems.  So make sure you choose a surveyor you know and can trust.  Don’t let the seller or broker choose the surveyor for you.  Get the best!

Runs Great?

Water temp is still in the low 40’s so waiting on 50 degree water temp. At least it comes up pretty quickly this time of year.

Enjoy the spring, and have fun!  See you Soon, Paul
