Kiwi Grip Deck
Kincora Kiwi Grip non-skid is completed. To prep the deck took a day of sanding. I used my Fein DA sander with 80 grit hooked up to a vacuum to keep the job clean. With the vacuum I could see the deck surface, which was important since there was very little paint on the deck.
It took a few hours to tape off the deck, which was made easier by having the hardware stripped. As you can see the old sea hood is history and the new more efficient sleeker hood improves the boats looks, and allows access to all the hardware for halyards and vang.
I found using a 4” chip brush to apply the Kiwi Grip was the way to go. This lets you put the paint on thick enough and even. Then each section was rolled 4-5 times. The first two times with decent pressure on the roller to create the texture desired. Then changing the angle for the final rolls with the last roll having no pressure to blend and make sure all air is removed. You cannot see the overlaps on the finished product and blending is very easy.
One key point is to have the tape set up to remove once each section is completed. I did this by cutting the tape with a razor blade and then with gloves it was easy to pull the tape and toss it off the boat. The deck took 1 gal and 1 qt. Time to tape, wipe down with alcohol, and then paint with just one person was 17 hrs. I am very happy with the results now that it has been a month of use and the non-skid is fantastic.
